The Departed (Movie Review)

The Departed- trailer

One of my favourite movies is ‘The Departed’. It came out in 2006 and the cast includes Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Leonardo Di Caprio, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga and some other people (Just because I’m not mentioning their names, it doesn’t mean they aren’t important). It’s a thrilling crime drama that had me hooked from beginning to end. I’m pretty sure I’ve watched it more number of times than I can count.

The film is set in Boston and revolves around the Irish-American mob and organized crime. The State Police are after one such mobster, Frank Costello( Jack Nicholson). Two of the cops recruit Billy Costigan (Leonardo Di Caprio) before he graduates from the Police Academy and send him undercover to infiltrate Costello’s gang. Little do they know that Costello has one of his own spies in the Special Investigations Unit of the State Police. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), Costello’s informant, quicky rises up in his position in the Special Investigations Unit and keeps Costello always one step ahead of the Police. Billy, on the other hand earns the trust of Costello and the other members of the gang and starts informing the cops about everything. It later becomes clear to both, Costello and the cops, that they have a mole in their midst. Billy and Colin are suddenly in a race to uncover and expose each other’s identities to protect themselves.

The plot is captivating and the incredibly interesting characters are played by some of my favourite actors. It’s the sort of movie which won’t let you leave your seat until you’re done watching it. I kind of love Martin Scorsese because of this movie. If thrillers are your thing, it’s a must watch.
